Referee Paolo Tagliavento stopped the game between Cagliari and Inter just after kick-off at the Stadio Sant’Elia, after racist chanting from the home support, directed against Inter’s black players, including Samuel Eto’o and Douglas Maicon.
The tannoy system twice requested fans to refrain from the offensive actions, and warned that the game would be abandoned if they did not stop.
The delay in play continued for around three minutes, and shows that the authorities in Italy are looking to step-up their action against racism in Italian football.
