Casiraghi vacates his post as Italy U21 coach

The worst kept secret in Italian football was confirmed today when Pierluigi Casiraghi vacated his position as head coach of the national Under 21 side.
The FIGC’s website made the announcement on Wednesday afternoon and a successor will be named shortly with Milan legend Paolo Maldini one of the favourites to succeed the former Juventus striker.
Federation president Giancarlo Abete thanked Casiraghi for his efforts and the outgoing coach did likewise by saying: “I would like to thank the FIGC and CONI for all the support they have given me in my role as head coach. I would especially like to thank all the players who have served under me and wish them all success in their future careers”. The writing had been on the wall for the former Chelsea man after his side squandered a two goal first leg advantage against Belarus in the Euro 2011 Under 21 championship play-off.
