Cesena dumped out of the Coppa Italia by Novara

Cesena were the only top-flight casualties after Wednesday evening’s Coppa Italia matches. The Serie A new boys were humbled 1-3 at their Dino Manuzzi stadium by current Serie Bwin table toppers Novara. The hosts went ahead just before the break through Ezequiel Schelotto but second-half goals from Raffaele Rubino, Francesco Evola and Guillaume Gigliotti gave the visitors their shock win.
Elsewhere, Catania needed extra-time to see off the challenge of Varese, Nicolas Spolli grabbed the Sicilians winner just three minutes from time to give under fire coach Marco Giampaolo’s men a 4-3 victory. Brescia narrowly edged past Cittadella thanks to an Alessandro Diamanti goal 15 minutes from time. Udinese thrashed Padova 4-0 at the Stadio Friuli and Lazio cruised past Portogruaro 3-0 at the Stadio Olimpico.
An 88th minute strike from Uruguayan Gaston Ramirez gave Bologna a 3-2 victory over Modena and Javier Chevanton was on target for Lecce as they disposed of Siena by the same score line. Cagliari strolled to victory in Sardinia against Piacenza to ease the pressure on coach Pierpaolo Bisoli. A double strike from Nene helped the islanders to a 3-0 win.
