Club Focus – Inter – Coppa win and Gerrard in?

The transfer window has been closed a matter of days, but José Mourinho has apparently told Inter President Massimo Moratti that Steven Gerrard is the player that he needs for next season. In past seasons the idea of the Anfield idol leaving the club he loves, but should Liverpool fail to qualify for the Champions League this season then there has been increasing speculation that both Gerrard and Fernando Torres may decide to leave. The Merseyside club have also been reported to be having financial trouble and should Inter make them, to borrow from Marlon Brando, ‘an offer they cannot refuse’ then it could be hard for them to keep hold of their captain. Fans of la Beneamata would doubtless love to see Gerrard arrive in Milan (only in the Nerazzurro colours of course) and it would be a big statement to the rest of Europe about Inter’s ambition. They would face stiff competition from the likes of Manchester City and Real Madrid but would be confident that they could tempt the player.

One player who will not be moving clubs is Douglas Maicon. The Brazilian’s agent has stated that, despite consistent rumours linking his client with Manchester City, there has been no contact over a possible move. Maicon is a very important player for Inter, and to see him leave would leave a hole at right-back that may not be able to be filled no matter who Inter signed to replace him. There is little point in selling a player for whom you cannot find a better replacement.

Wednesday evening saw the first leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final between Inter and Fiorentina, which the Nerazzurri won 1-0 thanks to yet another goal from Diego Milito, who is firmly staking his claim as one of the very best strikers in the world (and making his continual absence from Diego Maradona’s Argentina squad look ridiculous). It was a good performance from Inter and they will expect to progress to the final where they will face either Roma or Udinese. The game also saw a rare start for the ever-popular (at least in this club focus) Marco Materazzi, who, playing in the centre of defence, looked like he had never been out of the team.

Speaking of Materazzi, his return to the side also saw his return to giving his opinion to anyone who will listen as he talked about the potential return to the Azzurri squad of Alessandro Nesta and Francesco Totti. ‘Matrix’ said in no uncertain terms that he thinks Nesta is the very best defender in the world and that he should go, but was less enthusiastic about seeing Totti make the trip. Materazzi also confessed that he has already booked a holiday for June because he does not feel that a trip to South Africa is very likely, but he has spoken to Marcello Lippi recently: “We spoke on the phone and he told me he was just trying to make a joke [about not seeing Inter as they have no Italian players]. In the last two matches of the Coppa Italia, we showed we have some Italians in the squad.” Should Football Italiano have to pick their guests for a fantasy Calcio dinner party, ‘Matrix’ would be first on the list, there would likely never be a dull moment when Marco is around.

On Sunday, Inter take on Cagliari at the Giuseppe Meazza, in a game which they will be expected to win. It will also be something of a grudge match between José Mourinho and Rossoblu tactician Massimiliano Allegri – who recently won the Panchina d’Oro as the best Coach in Serie A last season. Despite saying that he did not see the award as a duel with Mourinho, Allegri has to accept that it is likely (as seems to happen with great frequency) that the Inter Coach feels that he has been wronged and that the title should have been his. Should Inter win, it will be interesting to see if the ‘Special One’ mentions anything about it in his post-match press conference – assuming he turns up of course.
