Di Vaio or Maccarone could earn Milan move

Bologna’s Marco Di Vaio and Palermo’s Massimo Maccarone are in pole position to be signed by Milan, who need a new striker in the January transfer window.
A long-term injury to veteran Pippo Inzaghi highlighted Milan’s need for back-up to Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who has been forced to play the majority of games due to a lack of alternatives.
Milan wanted to sign Cagliari’s promising Alessandro Matri but were rebuffed as Rossoblu President Massimo Cellino has repeatedly made it clear that he has no intention of letting his star striker leave in January. So they have now turned their attention to Di Vaio and Maccarone.
Di Vaio, 34, has been one of Serie A’s most consistent goalscorers over the past two seasons despite his age. Bologna’s financial problems mean they may be forced to sell him for a nominal fee, which would be perfect due to Milan’s own limitations.
Maccarone, 31, only joined Palermo last summer but has had a positive impact with the Sicilians. He actually began his career with Milan in 1998 but never made an appearance for the Rossoneri before being shipped out, but 12 years later he could be set for a shock return.
Milan’s other targets included the likes of former Juventus striker David Trezeguet, 33, who now plays in Spain for Hercules. Manchester City’s transfer-listed Roque Santa Cruz, 29, remains an option, but it is anticipated that Milan would prefer either Di Vaio or Maccarone.
