Doni refutes match-fixing allegations

Atalanta captain Cristiano Doni who finds himself in the middle of another match-fixing and betting scandal has refuted allegations that he was involved and declared his belief in the judicial system.
The betting scandal came to light yesterday when police arrested former Lazio star Beppe Signori who is believed to be the ringmaster and opened up investigations in games from Serie A, B and the Lega Pro.
Doni who has spent 10 years at Atalanta in two different spells was also accused of being one of the influential members of this betting ring, but in a statement to ANSA he denied any involvement.
“In light of press reports about his involvement in the investigation of Cremona, Cristiano Doni would like to state that he has always certainly acted within the rules. He places the utmost confidence in the organs of justice and ordinary sports. He would like to state his surprise at his name being linked and is not aware of any facts in dispute.”
Doni played a major part in Atalanta’s promotion to Serie A this year. He was previously investigated for match-fixing in 2001 for a Coppa Italia game between the Nerazzurri and Pistoiese, but was acquitted of all charges. Welcome Bonus Offer Betway
