Gomez fit for Inter showdown

Inter will face a near full strength Bayern Munich on Wednesday night, after Mario Gomez confirmed he has shaken off an ankle knock to play.
The prolific marksman, who has netted 18 times in the Bundesliga this season, complained of bruising to his ankle following the victory over Mainz 05 on Saturday.
The swelling has now subsided, giving the former Stuttgart striker an opportunity to make his first real impression in Champions League football, against the current holders.
Speaking to Bayern’s official website, Gomez said: “It’s still a bit thick but everything is okay again. I don’t think there will be a problem for Wednesday.”
Inter are still sweating on the fitness of playmaker Wesley Sneijder and Brazil defender Lucio, with the Brazilian desperate to face his former club.
The Nerazzurri overcame a determined Cagliari side on Saturday, completing Leonardo’s ninth victory in eleven games since he took over. The gap between Inter and Milan remains five points.
Meanwhile, Dejan Stankovic has dismissed Bayern coach Louis Van Gaal’s comments that the Germans are better equipped than they were when losing the final last year.
Speaking to the Gazzetta dello Sport, Stankovic said: “The teams haven’t changed much compared to last year.
“I heard the comments from Louis Van Gaal the other day about Arjen Robben and Ribery being back, and they are a strong point.
“But we are always the same and we are aiming to go through. It will be difficult but we are on the right path. The Champions League is different to Serie A, and we have to take it the right way.”

Inter will hope to avoid a similar fate to Milan and Roma in the last-16, with both suffering first-leg home defeats.
