Immobile must fight to stay with Lazio and avoid tempting transfers

Back in the Summer of 2014, Ciro Immobile had just completed a season that was going to kick-start his career. After an excellent 2012-13 with Pescara in Serie B, where he scored 28 league goals, he had struggled in Serie A with Genoa before that 2013-14 year with Torino. With the Granata, he had netted 22 league goals in 33 matches, and was touted as the next big thing in Italian football. Calcio mourned as he made a subsequent move out of Serie A, to the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund.

Three goals in 23 in Germany opened Immobile up to one season wonder accusations, and a 2015 move to Sevilla in La Liga proved just as disappointing, as did his 2016 January move to Torino. And so it’s with some surprise that ‘the old’ Immobile seems to have returned with his 2016 move to Lazio. The striker who had long fallen out of favour in the Nazionale team, appears to have put behind him any nagging doubts about his ability after those numerous disappointments, to become leading Serie A striker once again.
16 goals by March is a good tally, one behind the football betting tipster favourite Mauro Icardi, five ahead of the established star Carlos Bacca, and four above one of Serie A’s main starlets, Nikola Kalinic. His brace at the weekend away to Bologna took his record to six in six.
But as Italy begins to regain faith in the 27-year-old as a possible starter for the Azzurri in coming tournaments, Immobile needs to ensure he does not make the same mistake he did back in 2014, and seek a move elsewhere. While the decision is not all his, he should fight to stay with the Biancoceleste, fight to stay with a club into a second season for what would be the first time in his career, having worked himself through 10 sides already.
Most players reach their best form after familiarising themselves to their surroundings, and fellow players, over a period of years. With Immobile achieving so much this season without this benefit, if he can remain for a prolonged period in Rome, who knows what heights the striker could reach in the future.
