Inter’s Stankovic bows out of international football

Sky Italia reports that Inter midfielder Dejan Stankovic has called time on his international career following Serbia’s disappointing failure to quality for the EURO 2012 play offs.
Following 102 appearances and 15 goals for his country the European Cup winning star announced his decision following what turned out to be crushing final competitive game in Maribor this week as Serbia lost to neighbours Slovenia to see Estonia usurp them for second place in Group C.
Approaching the final two games requiring only a solitary victory for progression the disappointment in Belgrade is acute and for Stankovic, 33, the retirement is an acceptance of a need to focus all of his attention on domestic football as his final chance of representing his nation at a major tournament appears to have passed.
