Italy celebrates anniversary as squad visits President Napolitano

Ahead of their clash with Uruguay gli azzurri have made a visit to the scene of intense media spotlight from around the world in the previous week – as they visited the Quirinal palace to meet President Giorgio Napolitano.
Tonight concludes the Italian national sides campaign for 2011, the 150th anniversary since the unification of the Italian state. The friendly against Uruguay, the Coppa America champions, is to be the commemorative football event of the year’s birthday celebrations across the peninsular.
Meeting Napolitano was planned in advance but was given an extra poignancy considering the tumultuous events that have occurred at the highest level politically.
The nazionale’s captain Gianluigi Buffon spoke to the President on behalf of the squad declaring: “It is a great honour to be here with you Mr President for marking this great match for the 150 years since the unification of Italy. We are a people and a nation still young and sometimes this is still important. This nation needs the support of a cohesive political class, educated and responsible. The Juventus goalkeeper also took time to address the current political situation. We are all waiting for answers after the greatest difficulty – we will try and do our honour by Italy – as we always do.”
President Napolitano has turned to ‘Super Mario’ Monti who is to head a technical government following the resignation of Silvio Berlusconi. The President and a vast number of interested parties across Europe will be hoping for the strength and confident decision making from Monti that is being currently being displayed in the recent performances of Italy’s other ‘Super Mario’ – Balotelli – in the national side.
