Juventus Lose Captain Giorgio Chiellini For Six Months

Serie A giants Juventus have been rocked by news of captain Giorgio Chiellini being put down for a six-month recovery term following surgery to his knee on Tuesday.
The veteran defender was unfortunate to rupture his anterior cruciate ligament during training last week and had to be withdrawn from the Italian national setup as a result, with Lazio central defender Francesco Ascerbi taking his place in the squad as the Azzurri head into Euro 2020 qualifiers.
Chiellini travelled to Austria to have the operation done on his knee and Juve have announced that he could be back before the end of the current campaign.
“This afternoon, Giorgio Chiellini underwent surgery to reconstruct the anterior cruciate ligament of the right knee,” a statement from the team’s website reads. “The intervention, performed at the Hochrum clinic in Innsbruck by Professor Christian Fink in the presence of the Juventus Club Doctor, Dr. Tzouroudis, was perfectly successful.
“The expected recovery time is around six months.”
This should come as a huge blow to both Chiellini and Juve. Such an injury could leave one without much of a career remaining post-recovery at the age of 31 but it is hoped that he could return just as strong as the team could be deep in the Champions League by March – when he is projected to make a comeback.
The Italian was only able to make 22 starts in Serie A last season due to muscle issues but he was a key factor in their push for the league title in spite of his fitness woes. He scored the only goal of their season opener against Parma last month and had opened up on wanting to learn more under new boss Maurizio Sarri. However, this unfortunate incident leaves him sidelined until 2020 unless he manages to recover a lot quicker than suggested by medical personnel.
Chiellini is considered to be one of the best players in the world in his position and has been with I Bianconeri since 2005, despite being a target for some of the biggest teams in Europe over the years. He has made 384 appearances for the club and will hope to get as many more as he can as he stares down one of the toughest periods of his career.
He had previously voiced his intention to play for another two seasons (including this one) before taking on a backroom role at Juve so it remains to be seen how many games he can play before hanging up the boots.
Juve are still very much the favorites to win the Scudetto this season albeit having lost their captain for six months. William Hill is offering odds of 4/9 on the Turin side retaining the league title while Napoli are 5/1 with Ladbrokes. Inter are currently on top of the standings, tied on points with Juve (six), and Bet365 has 6/1 odds on the San Siro side breaking the former’s stranglehold on top-flight Italian football. Torino are also on six points at the moment, but the bookies don’t believe in their chances of an upset and you could get a 150/1 deal at Paddy Power.
As for the Champions League, Juventus are 10/1 to lift the big-eared trophy with Coral while Premier League side Manchester City are favored to do so at 10/3 with Skybet.
