Juventus miss the chance to stretch their lead

Juventus’ 0 – 0 draw in Verona with Chievo was one of five Serie A games which ended goalless on Sunday. Domenico Di Carlo’s excellently drilled Chievo team played a successful pressing game against Juve’s 4-1-4-1 formation that had been so effective against Milan the previous week. However, Juventus’ performance will only serve to reinforce the thinking that Antonio Conte’s side can’t find the right attacking key to unlock opponents’ defences.
Both sides had chances, notably for Chievo, Cyril Théréau’s disallowed goal in the first half, ruled out for a foul on Andrea Pirlo, and a Sergio Pellissier effort which was cleared off the line by Alessandro Del Piero. While Del Piero himself headed a chance for a Juve winner onto the post late in the second half.
After the game, Conte told Sky Italia: “I’m regretful about the result, but I’ve nothing to say to the team about desire and attitude.” Meanwhile, Di Carlo was left rueing the referee’s decisions in La Repubblica: “A couple of things [in the game] have left a bitter taste in my mouth, and a number of decisions went against us. However, I say well done to my lads.”
Although they remain top of the table, Juventus have scored only twice in their three away games this season which, this week, had rumours in some quarters linking Juve to Premier League players, Theo Walcott and Carlos Tevez. Meanwhile, Chievo are sixth in the table, just outside the European places.
