Lavezzi: “A pity we couldn’t fight longer”

Napoli talisman Ezequiel Lavezzi has expressed his regret at the Azzurri’s title challenge falling apart in recent weeks and believes it will be tough to recreate the same form next season.
The Partenopei were in the race for the Scudetto until a month ago, but three successive losses have now left them fighting for second spot with Inter who they face on Sunday.
Lavezzi, who has been a fundamental part of the Napoli team for the past four years since then promotion to Serie A to this season where Champions League qualification lies just a point away.
“In the summer we did not expect to fly so high, but the way we started, we then began to believe it. After the victory in Rome (against Lazio) we knew we would claim the Champions League.
“But if you look back, I do regret the fact that this year we had a chance to take advantage and even win the league but only due to a bit ‘of inexperience, we could not fight all the way with AC Milan.”

In his interview with Radio Marte, the Argentine revealed the decisive moment when Napoli lost their way: “The key game in this sense, was the loss to Udinese. To repeat this next year, will surely be difficult.”
Napoli face Inter at the San Paolo on Sunday and know that a point will be enough to ensure their progression to the group stages of Europe’s elite competition, something which Lavezzi is eager for.
“We understand that we are a point away from a fundamental goal. We must be calm. Inter will play their game, we ours. If the fans support us as usual, we can celebrate together after the game.”
As for the squad for next season, Lavezzi revealed his special relationship with Uruguayan hitman Edison Cavani and believes the team must reinforce in order to compete on all fronts.
“I share a beautiful friendship with Cavani, I got him a puppy after the birth of his son. For next season, we should keep together the core of this group and a few additions will give us a wider range to fight for all our goals.” Welcome Bonus Offer Betway
