Leonardo: “Inter need to show that we are the best”

In his first press conference as Inter Coach, Leonardo has stressed the importance of getting a positive result in tomorrow’s clash with Napoli and asserting dominance over Serie A once more.
Leonardo who only took over the reigns of the Nerazzurri on Christmas day after the unceremonious exit of Rafa Benitez from the club believes his team are ready to mount a comeback for the Scudetto.
“Inter has to be aware of what a force they have become. They have been winning for the past five years, and last year was obviously a crowning achievement for the club.
“But the team does not rest on its laurels. We now go on to the field knowing that we are the best, but of course, we need to show it in our performances. This team has a large appetite.”

Inter are currently some way off the pace in Serie A trailing Leonardo’s former club and city rivals Milan by a massive 13 points in the standings albeit with two games in hand.
However, the Brazilian is not really concerned about the table at the moment and feels it is essential that the team addresses every game individually and does its best.
“We think about one game at a time. We have some matches to recover and restore points, but you must always concentrate on the next game. The most important thing right now is to concentrate on tomorrow’s game and try to do our best.”
Julio Cesar has been ruled out of the clash with Napoli as he suffered a strain to his left hamstring. This season Inter have had terrible luck with injuries, but Leonardo thinks they can overcome these challenges.
“The injury to Julio Cesar was a surprise, although it is true that these players haven’t had an easy year. In any case, Castellazzi is more than prepared. The first thing you need to get rid of injuries is to not fear their occurence. We are not afraid of injuries.”
Leonardo’s move to Inter raised a lot of eyebrows in Milan following his 13-year association with the Rossoneri first as a player then a director and finally as a Coach. But, the former midfielder says he is not deterred by the criticism he has endured from the fans.
“Everything is important, it is not true that I do not care, but there is a peace in my choice that makes me feel peaceful. I have this peace of mind with respect and accept all of these reviews, positive and negative.”
