Mazzarri: “Our strength lies in never looking at the standings”

Napoli Coach Walter Mazzarri has stated that his team’s phenomenal Scudetto challenge has been founded on taking every game as it comes and never once looking at the league table to realise what the team has achieved.
The Vesuvians are only three points behind leaders Milan and with eight more rounds to play, Napoli could well be celebrating its first Scudetto since the heydays of Diego Maradona in the late 80s.
But, despite being convinced of his team’s qualities Coach Mazzarri insists that his players will only think about the table at the end of the season and only aim for performing their best in the coming games.
“I think our strength has been never to look at the standings, and we will continue not to. The next eight rounds will be like eight finals for us. So far, we are more than pleased with the growth that this team has made and we want to continue that way.”
With the Scudetto race getting ever tighter, as Inter are in second spot just two points behind Milan and one ahead of Napoli and with the Milan derby to be played this weekend, Mazzarri believes that the title will go down to the wire.
“I have a feeling that the title will be decided on the final day of the season. And I believe that we will still be there fighting for it. But as I said, we are alienated from everything and we run by ourselves.”
The former Sampdoria Coach explained that the players at his disposal aren’t ones that our used to fighting for the title and hence it was most important to have a positive feeling in the dressing room.
“My staff and I think it is important for the players to express themselves best. My focus is only on this, not on the numbers and charts. Historically, this group here is not one which is trained to fight for the top spot.
“We are young, the boys have been full of desire to do well in the past but we weren’t really mixing it up with teams going for the title. So when I speak with the boys I want to convey to them the serenity to not to feel this weight so that they can play freely.”

Mazzarri and Napoli will surely be watching the Milan derby intently as an Inter victory or draw might see the gap at the top reduced even further while the Neapolitans welcome Lazio next Sunday.
