Mexes demands Shakhtar response

Philippe Mexes has called for an improved defensive display when the Giallorossi face Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday evening.
The Champions League round of 16 match will give Roma a chance to erase memories of last weekend’s 2-0 defeat to Napoli, a game Mexes sat out due to suspension.
Speaking to Uefa.com, Mexes said: “Even if I had played, it doesn’t mean we wouldn’t have lost. We concede too many goals and we have to improve.
“We have had our share of bad luck at times, but it’s clear that if we took more care it would be easier to win games,”
he added.
The Frenchman believes the game will also provide a welcome distraction from constant off-field speculation concerning potential takeover bids and un-renewed player contracts.
“This match could be a good medicine for Roma and we will do our best.
“At this moment, all I want to think about is playing as well as I can. After all there is no telling whether in my next match I won’t have an accident, be ruled out for six months, and end up with no contract,”
he concluded.
A product of Auxerre’s youth academy, 28-year-old Mexes has represented France 20 times and has established himself as one of Roma’s most reliable performers this season.
