Mexes injury gives Claudio Ranieri more headaches

Roma defender Philippe Mexes has been ruled out of the Giallorossi’s big Champions League game in Switzerland tomorrow night against Basel. The French international is the latest in a long list of players currently on the treatment table as Claudio Ranieri’s squad reach a crucial time in their season. Matteo Brighi is set miss the next couple of weeks with a muscle problem along with Chilean midfielder David Pizarro and Brazilian Rodrigo Taddei.
Marco Cassetti and Daniele De Rossi are already a doubt for Wednesday evening’s match so it looks as though summer recruit Fabio Simplicio will start the game in Switzerland. Next weekend is the first Rome derby of the season in a match that could make or break Il Lupi’s current campaign. With captain Francesco Totti likely to be suspended for the match after his sending off last Saturday against Lecce, Ranieri may decide to leave De Rossi out of the starting 11 in Basel in a hope that he can regain full fitness for Sunday afternoon’s big showdown.
