Milan look to Higuain in Champions League push

The first high profile signing of the Leonardo reign at Milan could involve Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuain, according to reports in Italy.

The former Milan Coach is set to take up the reigns of Technical Director following the takeover by Elliott Management, and in a sign of apparent intent to invest on the field, it is suggested that he has spoken to Juventus General Manager Giuseppe Marotta about the former Napoli striker. As a result the sports betting online reports are backing a move from Turin.
Higuain turns 31 in December, and struggled relatively last year with Juventus, netting 16 league goals in 35 starts – not a bad record, but fewer than the 24 and 36 he managed in the previous two terms. Juventus may see this as an ideal time to cash in on a player whose resale value is on the cusp of going down quickly due to his age, and the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo means saving on Higuain’s salary would be welcome.
Milan would see him as an ideal front-man, having struggled to get the best out of Andre Silva. Poor form from Nicola Kalinic seems likely to move him down the pecking order, and Carlos Bacca spent last term on loan. Patrick Cutrone was impressive for a 20-year-old, scoring 10 in 17 starts, but there is a clear need for an established, proven goalscorer if the club are to aim for the Champions League this season.
A signing of this size would be the first signal of clear intent on the pitch by Elliott Management, having brought in the likes of Leonardo, Ivan Gazidis and the rumoured arrival of Paolo Maldini into the Rossoneri ranks off the field. While plentiful funds do not seem to be available, it does appear the new, possibly interim, American owners are looking to professionalise the club, adding much clearer organisation, than the previous regime had implemented. What’s more, the decision to bring in management with experience at Milan will also go down well with the Tifosi – Maldini was very much snubbed by Silvio Berlusconi at the end of his career at San Ciro.
But on the pitch is where in the end the success will be assessed, and players like Higuain will make a clear difference – tired and tested, and currently a Serie A record holder for goals in one season (with Napoli), he still has a number of good footballing years ahead of him and would fit the bill as an immediate boost up front for Gennaro Gattuso.
