Montella believes Roma can hold their heads high

Vincenzo Montella watched on as his Roma team crashed out of the Champions League 3-0 to Shakhtar Donetsk. This 6-2 destruction on aggregate did not bring the criticism from Montella that many expected
He spoke after the game saying controversially that his team improved: “We leave the competition with our heads held high. Before the game I asked my players to be consistent and improve aside from the result. I think my players took a big step in that respect.”
He continued stating that it was the red card that changed the game. “I’m happy with the performance of my team as, until we went a man down, we created a great deal and had a good approach against a fine squad. We had five or six shots on goal in the first half, then the red card changed everything. You cannot play at certain levels down to ten men for 50 minutes.”
When asked about whether this would have an effect on his team he claimed that he did not think so: “My team went out for the win. I see a group that is united and that is why we cannot be demoralised. When I took over, the team lost determination during negative moments. Instead against Shakhtar, we were always solid and mustn’t be downhearted, as we are on the right track.”
Roma face Lazio in the Derby this weekend and Montella will want to keep his team as motivated as possible as they fight it out with their City rivals for a Champions League place. Welcome Bonus Offer Betway
