Montella urges Roma to show character

Roma coach Vincenzo Montella today called for his Roma team to show their character when they face Inter at Stadio Olimpico tomorrow night.
Following a crushing 2-3 home defeat to Palermo on Saturday, Montella is under increased pressure to deliver in the Italian Cup, in a two-legged contest that could decide his own future in Rome.
Speaking to Corriere dello Sport, Montella said: “The difference will be personality rather than individual shots. Who wears the shirt should not only have talent, but temperament, the character to respond to situations such as what happened to us this time.”
When referring to the Palermo loss, Montella warned the players who were seeking an exit away from the club, thought to be Mirko Vucinic and Jeremy Menez, that they will be judged solely by their performances on the pitch.
“If there is a player who wants to leave, they should do well on the field and prove they deserve a better team than Roma,” added Montella.
The former Sampdoria forward stressed that although he did not feel betrayed by his player’s apparent lack of commitment, he admitted many needed to improve if they are to beat an inconsistent Inter.
“It is a fact that we have repeated the same mistakes and it cannot be a coincidence,” said Montella.
With Thomas Di Benedetto set to take-over the Rome club, subject to regulatory approval, Montella’s own position looks uncertain, with many predicting a return to the capital for under-fire Chelsea coach Carlo Ancelotti.
