Napoli advance in Europa League through late Cavani goal

Napoli became the only Italian team to qualify for the knockout stages of the Europa League through an injury time Edison Cavani goal. The Partenopei needed a victory to ensure their passage to the next stage and Cavani’s 94th minute header meant that there would be at least one Italian representative in the Round of 32.
Steaua Bucharest to their credit did well to restrict the Italians for long periods and had the better opportunities to take the lead in the first half. However, in the second period the Azzurri piled on the pressure and Cavani’s goal was little more than they deserved.
The last time these two teams had met they had produced an equally entertaining fixture with Napoli fighting back from 3-0 down to tie things up at 3-3 right at the end of injury time. It was a similar script in this game too as a corner swung in by Marek Hamsik was met with a glancing header at the near post by the Partenopei’s leading goalscorer.
The San Paolo went crazy with celebrations and Cavani labelled the result as unbelievable. “It is a miracle. I am very happy for this city that always drives us forward, even in our toughest moments. I dedicate the goal and this victory to God.”
Azzurri Coach Walter Mazzarri was visibly elated with the result and he was quick to praise his team who are also third in Serie A. “We always try to play some good football. We see that we are born to suffer as we often win only in the last seconds. We were good at the end and deservedly won.”
“We’re growing, we are still a young team but we are growing very well. And it is thanks to everyone who is doing an excellent job at the moment. Now we must turn our attention towards Lecce. It will be a difficult test as they are fit and it will be one of the most important games.”

Napoli advanced in second place in Group K with Liverpool qualifying in top spot. The draw for the Round of 32 will take place on Friday shortly after the Champions League draw. Welcome Bonus Offer Betway
