Napoli sign promising Argentine defender

Napoli have announced the official signing of Federico Fernandez, a young Argentine defender who has attracted attention from many of Europe’s biggest clubs.
But the 21-year-old has opted to join Napoli’s substantial South American contingent, which also includes Ezequiel Lavezzi, Edinson Cavani and Walter Gargano. The highly-rated centre-back will join up with his new team-mates at the end of the season as he has been allowed to continue his development in Argentine for the next few months.
Napoli have paid a reported €3 million to Estudiantes, Fernandez’s boyhood club. The fee will be split into three instalments, the first of which will be paid imminently, before further payments are made in June and then in January 2012.
Fernandez said about his transfer: “I am very happy that everything has gone well. Italy is the ideal country for us Argentines.
“Napoli was Maradona’s team. The presence of Ezequiel Lavezzi and Jose Sosa influenced my decision a lot.
“Sosa has spoken very well of the city and the fans. We even travelled together on the plane. There was also Edinson Cavani and Walter Gargano.
“The Napoli fans are very similar to the Argentine ones and this fascinates me.”

Contrary to some reports, the arrival of Fernandez is not set to influence Paolo Cannavaro’s future. The captain, who plays in the same position as Napoli’s new signing, is out of contract in the summer and has been unable to find an agreement with the club about a renewal, although he is expected to put pen to paper sooner rather than later.
