Palermo reject Genoa’s Maccarone bid

Palermo have rejected a swap deal that Genoa proposed that would have seen Raffaele Palladino head to Sicily in exchange for out-of-favour striker Massimo Maccarone.
Maccarone only joined Palermo in the summer but has struggled to hold down a first-team spot, leading to speculation that he has asked for another transfer in the January transfer window. A host of clubs have been linked with the 31-year-old due to his goalscoring exploits last season for Siena, but Genoa are the first ones to have had a bid rejected.
Genoa have underachieved this season so far having spent a significant amount on new players in the summer. Davide Ballardini, who has recently taken over as coach, is keen to put his stamp on his new club and sees Maccarone as an ideal recruit. It seems Ballardini doesn’t see Palladino as part of Genoa’s future as he offered Palermo the chance to trade the two players, which the Rosanero were not interested in.
The 26-year-old Palladino has also fallen down the pecking order since Ballardini took over and it seems that he will be allowed to leave in the January transfer window, even if his destination will not be Palermo. The Sicilian club are not willing to negotiate a swap deal because although Maccarone has been primarily a substitute this season, they see him as an important part of the squad and believe he will get a chance to impress at some point this campaign.
