Prandelli won’t call-up Cassano for Romania friendly

Azzurri Coach Cesare Prandelli has revealed in an interview with the Gazzetta dello Sport that he will not call up Antonio Cassano for next week’s friendly against Romania. The Italy tactician said that Cassano’s expulsion from the Sampdoria squad following a heated argument with President Riccardo Garrone meant he did not warrant a call up to La Nazionale.
“I had said earlier that I would not call up players who behaved poorly or conducted themselves violently. When a player has been placed outside his club squad, he can’t be selected for the national team”, said the ex-Fiorentina Coach.
However, he refused to slam the door shut on Cassano’s Azzurri future and said FanAntonio needed to take some time off: “I won’t abandon Cassano, although he needs to sort out his problems with Sampdoria. I’ve spoken to him about it… I advised him to reflect on things, to stay close to his family”.
Prandelli said he was considering calling up Brescia’s Alessandro Diamanti and Juventus’ Alberto Aquilani after watching them in action at the weekend: “If Aquilani was fit then Lippi would have taken him to the World Cup. He’s an important player and ready to return. As for Diamanti, he seemed different – more dynamic and consistent. He could deserve to be selected”.
Mario Balotelli is also likely to return to the international fold despite being sent off for Manchester City in their game against West Brom: “Mario’s sending off against West Brom wasn’t a case of bad impulses. He was playing a real game as a real footballer. These things happen”.
