Serie B action round-up – Week 11 – Frosinone slip up, Novellino sacked from Reggina

Friday night saw another managerial casualty as the axe was wielded on Reggina Coach Walter Novellino. His team were beaten 2-0 at the Stadio Olimpico by a resurgent Torino. Luca Belingheri opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time and the hosts lead was doubled 22 minutes into the second-half with an absolutely superb strike from Rolando Bianchi, his ninth of the season. Reggina President Pasquale Foti sacked his beleaguered Coach on Saturday morning, announcing former Cremonese Tactician Ivo Iaconi as his replacement.

Leaders Frosinone slipped to only their second defeat of the campaign as they were soundly beaten 3-1 at Ancona. Uruguayan Juan Surraco put the hosts ahead on seven minutes but this was cancelled out by Fabio Mazzeo on 34 minutes. Just three minutes later, a Matías Miramontes strike regained the lead for the home side and the points were secured a minute into second-half injury time thanks to an Andrea De Falco goal. Cesena’s great recent form was halted by Grosseto as Pierpaolo Bisoli’s side were held to a 2-2 draw at the Dino Manuzzi. The hosts went ahead in the opening minute with a wonderful strike from Raymundo Do Prado, but Filippo Carobbio replied for the visitors shortly after. A minute after the break, Ezequiel Schelotto restored Cesena’s advantage but three minutes later on-loan Roma youngster Marco D’Alessandro grabbed his side a share of the points.

Albinoleffe Coach Emiliano Mondonico celebrated his 1000th game as a Boss as his side visited Brescia. It was a day to forget for the veteran as his side were thumped 4-1. A hat-trick from Andrea Caracciolo and a Davide Baiocco strike cancelled out an early goal for the visitors from Francesco Ruopolo. Empoli’s match went one goal better, as they hosted Ascoli in a six goal thriller at the Carlo Castellani. Ighil Vannucchi opened the scoring for the hosts after 27 minutes and a penalty from Brazilian Éder on 32 minutes seemed to put the game out of the reach of the visitors. Ten minutes after the break, Marco Bernacci gave the Biaconeri a lifeline but Éder, with yet another spot kick just four minutes later, restored the hosts two goal advantage. 16 minutes from time the game’s third spot-kick, this time from Mirko Antenucci, gave the visitors hope but injury-time saw Angelo Antonazzo secure all three points for the Tuscans.

In Piacenza another goal feast saw Modena grab all the spoils. Two goals from Michele Troiano and one from Roberto Cortellini were enough to see the Gialloblu over the finishing line – Michele Anaclerio and Davide Moscardelli were on target for the hosts. At last, Salernitana are off and running with an emphatic 4-1 demolition of Crotone at the Stadio Arechi. Mariano Stendardo, Manolo Pestrin and two from Francesco Cozza gave the Granata their first win of the season. Antonio Zito grabbed a consolation for Crotone. The game was marred by some unsavoury scenes after Salernitana defender Georgios Kyriazis, having been sent off, struck out at the referee, his actions earning him a seven match ban.

At the Via Del Mare, the tenants Gallipoli hosted their landlords Lecce in a Southern derby. It was the visitors who ran out comfortable 0-3 winners thanks to goals from Daniele Corvia and a brace from Guido Marilungo. Sassuolo were 1-0 winners against Cittadella thanks to a first-half strike from Luigi Riccio and remain just four points off the leaders. Padova and Triestina played out a dull goalless draw at the Stadio Euganeo. On Monday night, Vicenza hosted Mantova at the Romeo Menti, Davide Gavazzi put the home side ahead 13 minutes into the second half but a late goal from Tomas Locatelli grabbed his side a share of the points.
