Serie B action round-up – Week 13 – More woe for Frosinone and a late late show in Turin

The Friday evening curtain raiser for week 13 pitched Empoli against Reggina at the Carlo Castellani. It was the Tuscans who came out on top thanks to goals from Francesco Marianini and Claudio Coralli, as Salvatore Campilongo’s men kept pace with the leaders. Ancona were surprisingly beaten in Crotone, the hosts went in front after 20 minutes thanks to Antonio Bonvissuto. Alessandro Salvioni’s men replied just before the break through Pasquale Schiattarella, but with just six minutes to play, Andrea Mazzarani’s goal gave the hosts a valuable three points. Frosinone are in freefall, a third consecutive defeat, this time at struggling Gallipoli, has set alarm bells ringing. The game was settled in five frantic second half minutes with Massimiliano Scaglia giving the home side the lead on 66 minutes. Just four minutes later, the Canarini were level through Caetano but a minute later, Alex Pederzoli broke Frosinone hearts and left coach Francesco Moriero to wonder where it has all gone wrong. Cesena were held to a goalless draw at the Dino Manuzzi by Albinoleffe. In a dull contest, the Bergamo outfit demonstrated the steel that new coach Emiliano Mondonico has brought to the side since his appointment just over a month ago. Brescia and Triestina played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at the Mario Rigamonti. Two goals from the Rondinelle’s top marksman Andrea Caracciolo were cancelled out by Emiliano Testini and Francesco Volpe. This result left Giuseppe Iachini’s side in mid-table whilst Mario Somma’s men continue to slowly pull away from the relegation places.

Another new coach but the same old story for Salernitana as the Southern club stay rooted to the bottom of the table. A 3-1 defeat to Padova was their 10th defeat of the season and new coach Gianluca Grassadonia seems to have his work cut out to save the club from certain relegation. Padova are flying at the moment and goals from Antonio Di Nardo, Andrea Soncin and Andrea Bovo put Salernitarna to the sword. Emmanuele Ferraro grabbed a consolation for the visitors. Mantova picked up their first away win of the season at Piacenza, Davide Carrus and Manuel Spinate gave Michele Serena’s side a much needed win. Sassuolo and Modena locked horns at the Alberto Braglia in another tenants against landlords clash. In the end, the honours remained even as the game ended goalless. There was another stalemate in Vicenza, where Grosseto were the visitors, the result left both teams in mid-table. At the Lillo Del Duca, Ascoli entertained Cittadella in a match between two sides struggling for form. Mirko Antenucci put the hosts ahead, only for Nicolo Cherubin to level with 12 minutes to go. The Monday night clash was the weekend’s big game, as leaders Lecce travelled to Turin to face Torino. Stefano Colantuono’s side were desperate for a victory but it was the visitors who took the lead after 38 minutes through Daniele Corvia. A Rolando Bianchi penalty levelled things 20 minutes into the second half and then, in injury time at the end of the game, Bianchi netted again to seemingly give his team a share of top spot only to be denied three minutes later as Guillermo Giacomazzi levelled for the visitors to end a pulsating contest and keep Luigi De Canio’s side top of the pile.
