Serie B action round-up – Week 14 – Lecce stay top, Antonioli and Godeas roll back the years

International matches meant another depleted programme in Serie B, with only seven games taking place. Lecce remain top of the pile but had to come from behind against Padova at the Via Del Mare. William Jidayi gave the visitors the lead on 62 minutes, but goals from Daniele Corvia and Giuseppe Vives kept Luigi De Canio’s men ahead of the chasing pack. Ancona are just one point behind in second spot, Sunday’s hard fought 2-0 victory over Vicenza got their season back on track after week 13’s shock defeat to Crotone. Two goals in a minute mid-way through the first half from Salvatore Mastronunzio and Argentine midfielder Matias Miramontes, sealed the points for Alessandro Salvioni’s side. Cesena are having a splendid season and Sunday’s 0-1 win in Mantova keeps the Bianconeri in touch with the leaders. Their victory was mainly down to the heroics of veteran goalkeeper Francesco Antonioli, winner of two Scudetti with Roma and Milan, the 40-year-old shot-stopper was in inspired form, saving two spot kicks from Davide Carrus and Gaetano Carridi, the second save coming in injury time at the end of the game. Antonioli’s afternoon did however take a turn for the worse when he was given a two-match ban for insulting match referee Massimiliano Velotto in the changing rooms at the end of the match. Cristian Bucchi got the game’s only goal.

No so many fireworks at the Stadio Leonardo Garilli, where new Piacenza Coach Massimo Ficcadenti saw his side stifle promotion favourites Torino in a dull contest. Stefano Colantuono’s side sit fourth in the table while Piacenza stay second bottom. A fantastic away win by Crotone at Modena saw the Pitagorici move away from the relegation zone. Second half strikes from Andrea Mazzarani and Giuseppe Abruzzese sealed a memorable win for Franco Lerda’s side as Modena slipped to only their second home defeat of the season. Giuseppe Giannini’s Gallipoli chalked up their second away win of the campaign with a 1-2 win at the Stadio Tombolato against Cittadella. Two goals from their mercurial striker Ciro Ginestra, the first from the penalty spot, was enough to give the Southerners all three points. The home side’s consolation came from Davis Curiale. Triestina continued their good form under the tutelage of Mario Somma with an impressive 2-0 home win over Ascoli. Veteran striker Denis Godeas gave an absolute masterclass in forward play, grabbing his side’s first from the penalty spot, and then following up with a sublime chip over Ascoli goalkeeper Giorgio Frezzolini 11 minutes from time, to send his side into the top half of the table.
