Serie B action round-up – Week 15 – Ancona at the summit as Lecce lose to Brescia

Week 15 kicked off on Friday evening when stuttering Frosinone visited the Stadio Romeo Menti to face Vicenza. Canarini Coach Francesco Moriero has seen his side plummet in recent weeks, relinquishing top spot with barely a whimper. Rolando Maran’s side were in no mood for charity and easily disposed of the Lazio club thanks to goals from Sasa Bjelanovic and Davide Gavazzi. Ancona find themselves out on their own as league leaders with a convincing 1-3 derby day victory at Ascoli. The sensational Salvatore Mastronunzio collected a brace with Roberto Colacone grabbing the other, the Bianconeri’s consolation came from Mirko Antenucci. This result saw the end of Coach Alessandro Pane’s tenure at the club, he is replaced by veteran tactician Bepi Pillon. Lecce lost their grip on the leadership as they went down to a 1-0 defeat in Brescia, Andrea Rispoli getting the game’s only goal after 33 minutes. Triestina continue to make good progress under the shrewd management of Mario Somma. Saturday’s 2-0 home win over Cittadella propelled the Unione into sixth spot. Emiliano Testini put the home side ahead after 73 minutes, which was quickly followed eight minutes later by the now statutory goal from Denis Godeas. It was raining goals at the Stadio Eugeneo where Padova entertained Empoli. The visitors raced into a two goal lead thanks to an own goal from Trevor Trevisan and a 40th minute strike from Cristian Pasquato. After the break, Padova rallied and goals from Andrea Rabito and Antonio Di Nardo pulled them level, only for Francesco Marianini to give the visitors all three points with a goal in injury time at the end of the game.

Reggina did little to ease their relegation fears as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Crotone. All seemed set fair when Biagio Pagano put them ahead after just three minutes, but nine minutes later Andrea Mazzarani levelled for the hosts to leave the Amaranto third from bottom in the table. Another weekend and another draw for Guiseppe Giannini and his Gallipoli side, this time to lowly Mantova. A sparse crowd at the Via Del Mare witnessed a turgid affair and the 0-0 scoreline reflected the lack of quality on show. Grosseto entertained crisis-club Salernitana in a fiery encounter at the Carlo Zecchini. The visitors were ahead after just one minute thanks to a goal from Evans Soligo but the hosts went into the break ahead with two goals from Chilean striker Mauricio Pinilla. A nasty undercurrent to the game came to a head in the second half as Grosseto’s Nicola Mora and Salernitana’s Vincenzo Fusco saw red and the points were shared thanks to a late strike from Vincenzo Pepe. Modena produced a thrilling performance as they dismantled Albinoleffe in Bergamo. Aiman Napoli, Andrea Catellani and Salvatore Bruno gave Coach Luigi Apolloni a valuable three points. Piacenza upset the form book as they grabbed a surprise 1-2 victory away to Sassuolo. Goals from Davide Moscardelli and Simone Guerra gave new Coach Massimo Ficcadento his first win. Alessandro Noselli got the host’s consolation. The Monday night fixture was the pick of the weekend as high-flying Cesena hosted Torino. After a cagey, goalless 72 minutes, Honduran Julio Leon gave the visitors the lead and it seemed that Stefano Colantuono’s men were on course for all three points. But six minutes later, Dominique Malonga grabbed a priceless equalizer, ensuring both sides stay in the promotion hunt.
