Serie B action round-up – Week 16 – Lecce and Ancona share top spot, Torino sack Colantuono

Week 16 started down in the South of the peninsula on Friday night as Salernitana hosted Gallipoli. The hosts were desperate for a win and got off to a fantastic start when Evans Soligo fired them in front after just five minutes. But goals from Pablo Pallante, Samuel Di Carmine and Francesco Di Gennaro ensured the Granata stay rooted to the bottom of the table. On Saturday, league leaders Ancona dropped valuable points as they were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Sassuolo. Two goals by scoring sensation Salvatore Mastronunzio were not enough for the hosts as Alessandro Noselli and Gaetano Masucci earned the Neroverdi a share of the points. Lecce now join Ancona at the summit after a thrilling game at the Via Del Mare against Grosseto. The visitors raced into a two goal lead with a brace from Chilean Mauricio Pinilla, but Medina Fabiano pulled one back for the hosts on the stroke of half-time. After the break, goals from defender Mariano Angelo and Guillermo Giacomazzi propelled Luigi De Canio’s men to the top of the table. Torino President Urbano Cairo called time on Stefano Colantuono’s tenure at the club after their 1-2 home defeat by a resurgent Crotone. Two farcical goals from Nicola Petrilli and Antonio Bonvissuto, put the visitors in a commanding position and although Rolando Bianchi grabbed his 12th goal of the season for Toro, it was not enough to save his club from defeat, or Colantuono from the sack. Former Siena coach Mario Beretta now takes charge. Empoli jump over Cesena into third spot after their 2-0 win against the Bianconeri at the Carlo Castellani. Claudio Coralli and Mirko Valdifiori secured the win for the Tuscans.

Frosinone finally stopped the rot after a 2-2 draw at the Stadio Matusa against Albinoleffe. Goals from Migjen Basha and Vincenzo Santoruvo for the hosts were cancelled out by Marco Cellini and Gabriele Perico for the visitors. Triestina’s recent good form came to an end in Modena as Salvatore Bruno’s brace propelled the Gialloblu up to fifth spot. Vicenza put their promotion aspirations back on track with an impressive 1-2 away win at Padova. Sasa Bjelanovic and Alessio Sestu got the all-important goals for Rolando Maran’s side. Trevor Trevisan got the host’s consolation. Giuseppe Pillon’s first game in charge of Ascoli ended in defeat at the Leonardo Garilli against Piacenza. Marco Bernacci put the visitors ahead on the stroke of half-time, but second-half strikes from Carlos Rincon and the ever-dependable Davide Moscardelli got Massimo Ficcadenti’s side over the finishing line. Reggina got their season back on track with the 4-0 destruction of Brescia at the Oreste Granillo. Two goals from Biagio Pagano, and one each for Emmanuel Cascione and Maurizio Lanzaro, made it a miserable day for Giuseppe Iachini’s side. Monday evening saw a basement battle at the Danilo Martelli in Mantova where Cittadella were the visitors. The hosts hit the front on 20 minutes through Davide Carrus but the visitors replied in emphatic fashion through Matteo Ardemagni and a quick fire double from Antimo Iunco to secure all three points
