Serie B action round-up – Week 17 – Lecce go three points clear, high drama in Ascoli

Week 17 got under way on Friday evening at the Atleti Azzurri d’Italia in Bergamo as Albinoleffe entertained league leaders Lecce. Daniele Corvia and Alberto Giulatto put the visitors two up before Gabriele Perico pulled one back for the hosts. The points were secured mid-way through the second half when Corvia netted for the second time taking his season tally to eight as the Giallorossi now stand alone at the top of the table. Ancona lose top spot after a surprising 2-0 away defeat in Grosseto, a penalty from Brazilian Joelson mid-way through the first-half was followed up by a goal from Chilean striker Mauricio Pinilla early in the second period as Alessandro Salvioni’s men relinquished top spot. Cesena’s recent downturn in form came to an emphatic end with the 4-0 destruction of Frosinone at the Dino Manuzzi. Two goals from Emanuele Giaccherini and one apiece from Cristian Bucci and Ezequiel Schelotto, condemned Francesco Moriero’s men to another heavy defeat. There was a real basement battle in Mantova as Salernitana were the visitors for Michele Serena’s first match in charge of the Virgiliani. The game ended 1-1 with the goals coming in the opening quarter of the contest. The hosts went in front thanks to a Gaetano Caridi goal, but the Granata responded with a strike from Andrea Tricarico. This result leaves Salernitana seven points adrift at the bottom whilst Mantova remain second bottom but still in touch with the clubs around them. Brescia hosted Empoli in a highly charged match at the Mario Rigamonti. The points were shared thanks to a brace from both Andrea Carraciolo for Brescia, and Brazilian Eder for Empoli.

The weekend’s big talking point came in Ascoli where the visitors were Reggina. After Mirko Antenucci had controversially given the home side the lead whilst a Reggina player was seeking treatment, the game descended into an all-out fight and was held up for six minutes until Ascoli Coach Giuseppe Pillon, a former boss in Reggio Calabria, allowed Biagio Pagano to score unchallenged to level proceedings. In the second half, goals from Emiliano Bonazzoli and Antonio Barilla sealed all three points for the visitors. Triestina and Crotone played out a goalless draw at the Nereo Rocco whilst in Cittadella, the points were shared in a 1-1 draw with Modena. Matteo Ardemagni put the hosts in front but the Gialloblu replied through Michele Troiano. Mario Beretta was not able to take his place on the Torino bench for their visit to Gallipoli as he had failed his medical. His assistant Daniele Zoratto did a sterling job however as the Turin giants ran out 1-0 winners thanks to a goal from David Di Michele. Stefano Pioli’s Sassuolo are clawing their way back into play-off contention with an impressive 2-0 home win over Padova. Jonathan Rossini and Mario Titone were on target for the Neroverdi. Monday evening saw a local derby between Vicenza and Piacenza at the Romeo Menti. The game ended in 0-0 draw to bring the curtain down on Week 17.
