Serie B action round-up – Week 19 – Cesena sink Lecce, Flachi’s wonder strike brings Christmas cheer to Brescia

Week 19 of the Serie B championship was disrupted by a blanket of snow that enveloped the peninsula. Four matches fell foul to the weather – games in Mantova, Trieste, Cittadella and Modena will now be replayed sometime in January.

The game of the weekend took place on Friday night in Cesena, as Luigi De Canio brought his table-topping Lecce side to the Dino Manuzzi. The game lived up to its billing and was effectively decided either side of half-time by Cesena’s mercurial Brazilian midfielder Raymundo Do Prado who collected his fourth and fifth goals of the season. Emanuele Giaccherini sealed the points on 59 minutes with Daniele Corvia grabbing a consolation for the Giallorossi 11 minutes from time. Despite this setback, De Canio’s men are winter champions due to the fact that Ancona’s game at Cittadella was postponed, Cesena are looking well placed in third position for a serious assault on automatic promotion in the New Year. Also on Friday night, Ascoli hosted Padova at the Stadio Del Duca and picked up all three points thanks to a Mirko Antenucci goal after just two minutes, the Bianconeri still remain in the relegation zone but this result now gives them a platform on which to build when hostilities resume in early January. Veteran striker Francesco Flachi rolled back the years on Saturday afternoon with a wonderful 88th minute strike to give Brescia a much needed home win against Modena. His stupendous volley from the edge of the penalty area will surely be a contender for goal of the season.

Gallipoli came from behind at the Via Del Mare to end Reggina’s recent revival. The visitors went in front on 29 minutes thanks to a Emiliano Bonazzoli goal but Giuseppe Giannini’s men are made of stern stuff and took the points, thanks to goals from Manuel Mancini and Massimiliano Scaglia, to end the year in mid table. Reggina will hope for a vast improvement after the Christmas break. Albinoleffe shocked Empoli with a convincing 2-0 win in Bergamo, Gabriele Perico and Luigi Sala were on target for Emiliano Mondonico’s side, who climb out of the relegation spots with this win, Empoli end the year in fifth spot. Mario Beretta is still searching for his first win as Torino coach after another forgettable day, this time in Vicenza. Alessandro Sgrigna’s goal 15 minutes from time left Beretta perplexed as to how his team, which has so much talent at its disposal, can play so badly. Grosseto’s year ended on a high with a hard fought 2-1 home win over Frosinone. Chilean Mauricio Pinilla put the hosts ahead with a penalty after 10 minutes and their lead was doubled on 28 minutes thanks to a goal from Carl Valeri. Fabio Mazzeo gave the Canarini hope with a 61st minute strike but the Tuscans hung on to keep their promotion hopes alive. The action resumes on January the 5th and looks set to go right down to the wire at both ends of the table.
