Serie B action round-up – Week 20 – Ascoli thrash Frosinone, while Ancona stay in touch with Lecce at the top

Week 20 of the Serie B championship kicked off the New Year with all teams looking to start 2010 off with a bang.

Ancona v Triestina: A brace from Salvatore Mastronunzio secured the points for Ancona enabling them to keep within sight of Lecce at the top. A last minute goal from Denis Godeas was too little too late for the visitors.

Crotone v Cittadella: The home side were reduced to ten men and had a penalty saved before the visitors took the lead with a penalty of their own. More drama ensued as a Ettore Mendicino 25 yard thunderbolt leveled the score in the 94th minute.

Empoli v Sassuolo: Fourth and fifth shared the points at the Stadio Carlo Castellani. Alessandro Noselli had tapped in the opener for the away side before a last minute header from Claudio Coralli kept Empoli’s impressive home record intact.

Frosinone v Ascoli: Lowly Ascoli thumped 9th placed Frosinone by five goals to one. Mirko Antenucci and Marco Bernacci both scored twice whilst Vincenzo Sommese added to his tally to leave the Stadio Matusa in shock.

Lecce v Vicenza: League leaders Lecce scored early through Gianni Munari but could not find the net again after this. Both sides had chances and Vicenza’s ex-Chelsea starlet Valerio Di Cesare saw red, but it was the home side who took all three points.

Modena v Cesena: Andrea Catellani deflected in the only goal of a game played in bad conditions. Snow was falling as Cesana slipped to a 1-0 defeat and in doing so relinquished the gap between third and sixth place to a single point.

Padova v Albinoleffe: The away side pulled off a superb victory in Padova with Valerio Foglio and Francesco Ruopolo scoring to lift Albinoleffe almost out of the relegation zone. Padova slip to 13th only two points from safety.

Piacenza v Gallipoli: The frozen conditions did not effect Davide Moscardelli’s finishing as he scored two fine goals – the second a deft chip over the keeper to help Piacenza slowly drag themselves out of the drop zone. Gallipoli need to watch over their shoulder as the relegation zone looms.

Reggina v Groseto: Reggina scored early through Biagio Pagano when he shot through a crowd, the lead lasted until the 26th minute when Mauricio Ferreira Pinilla’s towering header leveled for the away side. A good point for the home side, although Groseto will see this as a chance missed to go third.

Salernitana v Brescia: The Stadio Arechi watched a convincing Brescia victory as Davide Possanzini and Adam Vass scored either side of Salernitana’s Evans Soligo. The game was sealed by a penalty thanks to Andrea Caracciolo. The home side are rooted to the foot of the table, however a good start to the year for Brescia.

Torino v Mantova: Simone Loria got Torino off to a fantastic start at the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino with a superb header from a corner. Torino played well but poor defending in the last minute allowed Davide Carrus in to head in the equalizer. Torino will rue the points dropped as they stay in tenth.
