Serie B action round-up – Week 9 – Last gasp Modena sink Torino, Padova go third

Another round of games affected by international commitments kicked off on Sunday lunchtime as Vicenza hosted Cesena. Much was made of the unsociable start time and after a dull goalless draw, the spectators present in the Stadio Romeo Menti would have probably wished they had stayed at home. In the afternoon, at a more traditional time, Modena achieved a major shock by beating Torino in the Stadio Olimpico. A fiery game was settled two minutes from time when Juri Tamburini grabbed the all-important winner. Toro’s notoriously impatient President Urbano Cairo had a look of thunder as the teams left the field and Coach Stefano Colantuono may find his P45 waiting for him if performances do not improve.

Padova heaped more agony on Mantova with a 3-0 demolition at the Stadio Eugenio. Vincenzo Italiano’s 29th minute opener was eclipsed just six minutes later by an absolute thunderbolt from Andrea Rabito. In the second half Padova continued to dominate, and on 69 minutes Edgar Cani got his side’s third to put them third in the table. New Coach in Salerno, same old problems as the basement club lost 1-2 at home to Cittadella. It all looked good for the hosts when after just two minutes, Dino Fava fired them in front, but replies from Leonardo Pettinari and Matteo Ardemagni left the Southerners winless with just two points from their opening nine games.

It was raining goals at the Alberto Braglia in Modena as Sassuolo entertained Grosseto at their temporary home. Daniele Martinetti opened the scoring for the Neroverdi on 33 minutes but this was quickly cancelled out three minutes later as Filippo Carobbio levelled for the visitors. A penalty from Brazilian José Joelson on 42 minutes gave the visitors the lead going into the break but nine minutes after the re-start, the evergreen Alessandro Noselli got the hosts back on level terms. With nine minutes remaining however, Carobbio grabbed his second ensuring all three points went to Claudio Foscarini’s men.

In Bergamo, Albinoleffe played out a 1-1 draw with Ascoli in another bad tempered match. 18 minutes into the contest Marco Cellini added to his season’s tally with a cool finish, but just a minute from the interval Mirko Antenucci levelled things up for the visitors. 10 minutes into the second half, defender Gabriele Perico saw red for the home side but they hung on to claim a hard-earned point. The Monday night offering saw league leaders Frosinone at home to Crotone. The Canarini took the lead four minutes before the break through Vincenzo Santoruvo. Five minutes after the interval the visitors levelled through Aniello Cutolo and the game ended all square to leave Frosinone two points clear at the top.
