Lecce’s defeat at home by Cittadella along with the five of the top six all dropping points seem to show that no single team has the ability to run away with this league. With what looks like it is going to a very close finish coming up many potential promotion hopefuls came unstuck this week
Albinoleffe 0-3 Triestina: Luigi Della Rocca had given the away side the lead after eleven minutes but before the home side had chance to get back into the game Francesco Luoni headed over his own keeper for a bizarre own goal for two nil. Francesco Ruopolo missed a penalty for the home side before Nicola Princivalli scored his penalty for the home side.
Ancona 2-1 Torino: Disaster for Torino away at Ancona as they were defeated by a neat finish from Juan Ignacio Surraco Lame and then a tap in from Roberto Colacone. Torino headed one back through top scorer Rolando Bianchi, but Torino lost a fiery game with three red cards. This game was crucial to their promotion hopes.
Empoli 2-2 Gallipoli: Claudio Coralli stabbed the ball home from close range to give Empoli the lead before Daniele Daino equalised with a crashing drive before half time. Citadin Eder scored from the spot for Empoli after Luca Franchini was sent off for the foul but Daino had the last word with a breath taking free kick.
Frosinone 2-3 Piacenza: Vincenzo Santoruvo headed the home side into the lead. This did not last long as Simone Guerra, Davide Moscardelli, and Tomas Guzman then all slotted past the keeper from inside twelve yards to make it 1-3. Frosinone pulled one back courtesy of Gennaro Troianello’s close range drive off the bar.
Grosseto 1-1 Mantova: This game was decided on right on half time, Gianluca Freddi put the home side ahead after connecting with a free kick from six yards out. The away team were back in the game on forty five minutes when Gaetano Caridi coolly slotted home a penalty.
Lecce 1-5 Cittadella: Matteo Ardemagni and Tommaso Bellazzini both scored a brace whilst Antimo Iunco also got on the score sheet as Cittadella decimated Lecce in front of their home fans. Lecce’s only goal came from a Daniele Corvia penalty. Tommaso Bellazzini’s second long range shot was the pick of the bunch.
Padova 2-0 Crotone: Daniele Vantaggiato slipped through the defence and beat an on rushing goalkeeper to score the opener for Padova. Their second goal came in comical circumstances when Andrea Soncin was hit in the face from a defenders clearance only to see the ball roll into the net.
Reggina 0-1 Modena: A superb header from Michele Troiano after fourteen minutes was enough to wrap this game up for Modena. A missed opportunity for Reggina to try and climb out of the relegation zone, whilst Modena are now five points from the promotion places.
Salernitana 0-0 Cesena: No goals at the Stadio Arechi and little less to report. Cesena are now fourth and will be kicking themselves for passing up an opportunity to go second, whilst Salernitana remain rooted to the foot of the table.
Sassuolo 0-1 Ascoli: Mirko Antenucci slipped the ball under Walter Bressan to give the away side a shock win. Sassuolo could have caught up with Lecce with these three points but instead through the game away. Ascoli stay in twelfth spot.
Vicenza 1-0 Brescia: Daniele Martinelli connected with a free kick to head home and give Vicenza three points. Brescia had Andrea Rispoli sent off whilst the home side went to ten also loosing Antonio Giosa. Brescia’s hopes of promotion look a like they may be fading.
