The FI Index – Azzurri player ratings – Italy 0–1 Ivory Coast

Heavy rain at Upton Park was the setting for Cesare Prandelli’s first game in charge of the Azzurri. Although they fell to a one nil defeat at the hands on the Ivory Coast there are positives to take from the game. It is also worth bearing in mind as Prandelli stated that he has only had four days to mould this team and miracles will not happen over night. The Italians are also early in pre-season and fitness has to be taken into consideration.

23 Salvatore Sirigu

Position: Goalkeeper

Minutes played (game total): 90

Rating (game):7/10

.

The Palermo number one seemed comfortable on his first outing for the Azzurri. He made two saves in the first half that he would have been expected to make but never the less it gave him confidence and it showed. Left helpless for Kolo Touré header he can look back on his debut and be satisfied.

2 Marco Motta

Position: Right Back

Minutes played (game total): 69min

Rating (game):8/10

Marco Motta not only defended well but managed to maraud down the right wing on many occasion constantly helping the Azzurri to break. His best moment was on the 47th minute when another confident and skillful run saw Motta’s right foot shot hit the post. This was Italy’s best chance of the game and it was no surprise that it fell to the Juventus right back.

19 Leonardo Bonucci

Position: Center-back

Minutes played (game total): 90

Rating (game): 6/10

A solid first half was only marred with some overzealous back passes to Sirigu which were hit with too much pace. The second half saw Ivory Coast score and it is possible that Bonucci’s positioning was poor. He was booked later on in the game and seemed to lose the element of calm.

4 Giorgio Chiellini

Position: Center-back

Minutes played (game total): 90

Rating (game): 7/10

It was not the greatest game that Chiellini has ever played in the blue shirt of the Azzurri but it was an assured one. This went to show that he is still an integral part of the Italian back line and controlled proceedings in defence. He lost Touré for the goal due to a lack of concentration but overall showed that he is badly needed in this team.

3 Cristian Molinaro

Position: Left-back

Minutes played (game total): 90

Rating (game): 6/10

A quiet game for Molinaro but a decent display none the less, he played with composure and looked like he could easily make this role his own. He could do with some of the attacking vigor shown by Motta to further complement his game.

5 Daniele De Rossi

Position: Center-midfield

Minutes played (game total): 90

Rating (game): 7/10

De Rossi started the game as the better of the midfield players. He tried hard to spread the play with good passing and came close with a free kick on the 21st minute. The main thing for him was that he showed how needed he is in this team and done his cause no harm at all.

17 Angelo Palombo

Position: Center-midfield

Minutes played (game): 80

Rating (game): 7/10

Fought hard as would be expected. Superb harrying and tracking back throughout the game and looked motivated for the game. Some good forward play also saw him try some through balls in an attempt to create.

9 Mario Balotelli

Position: Attacking mid left

Minutes played (game total): 58

Rating (game): 7/10

After only the third minute the moody man who is soon to depart from Inter hit a free kick just over, two minutes later and he had another shot blocked on the edge of the box. More bright spells followed and on the 24th minute he hit a 35 yard free kick over the bar. A positive display showing that he could be fantastic if used correctly.

10 Antonio Cassano

Position: Forward

Minutes played (game total): 69

Rating (game): 8/10

Sharp, bright, creative and confident, the Sampdoria hit man looked as though he was out to prove a point. He won some important free kicks and his delivery to Amauri was perfect and should have been buried. He work rate was second to none and there is no doubt he will be important in the development of the Azzurri under Prandelli.

21 Amauri

Position: Forward

Minutes played (game total): 58

Rating (game): 6/10

Amauri struggled to get into the game but on the occasions when he did he looked competent and had some good touches. All in all his partnership with the other attacking players seemed one that with time could blossom.

7 Simone Pepe

Position: Attacking mid right

Minutes played (game total): 73

Rating (game): 6/10

The Juventus man started brightly with some good attacking runs down the right flank. He tried to break at every available opportunity and had a fairly good game. His shot on 51 minutes was easily gathered by the goalkeeper.

SUBSTITUTES

22 Marco Borriello

Position: Forward

Minutes played (game total): 32

Rating (game): 8/10

As soon as he came on he made a big impact getting in good positions and wanting the ball. His direct approach will give Prandelli much to think about as he looked like he could score at any moment. A tame effort on 87 minutes perhaps could have been struck better.

11 Fabio Quagliarella

Position: Forward

Minutes played (game total): 32

Rating (game): 6/10

A veteran on the disastrous World Cup, Quagliarella was poor. A sliced shot on 64 minutes his only real contribution in a quiet half an hour.

16 Giuseppe Rossi

Position: Forward

Minutes played (game/tournament total): 21

Rating (game): 7/10

Boosted Italy’s moral immediately when he came on, looked bright with good passing and good awareness. A huge shame he was not on earlier.

16 Mattia Cassani

Position: Right back

Minutes played (game total): 21

Rating (game): 7/10

Filled in as a perfect like for like for Motta showing there will be competition for this place under Prandelli. Good attacking elements to his game and showed good delivery on crosses.

8 Claudio Marchisio

Position: Attacking mid Right

Minutes played (game total): 19

Rating (game): 6/10

Did not have much time to impose himself on the game, however, he did nothing wrong either. He will not be too worried as he has shown his ability and will get longer run outs in the coming games.

18 Riccardo Montolivo

Position: Center Mid

Minutes played (game total):10

Rating (game): 6/10

A favourite of Prandelli, Montolivo only had ten minutes to show what he could do today but will be safe in the knowledge that he will play under his old manager. He got stuck in and did what he could in the time.
