The FI Index – Azzurri player ratings – Italy 1-1 New Zealand

The next game in Group F between Italy and New Zealand took place in Mbombela Stadium, Nelspruit. The noises from the Azzurri camp were positive before the game with Danielle De Rossi claiming “There are teams that we should beat, we’re better,” The opening 1-1 draw with Paraguay was seen as not good enough but also that there was no need to panic. This optimism was soon dashed as New Zealand took an early lead through Smeltz. A dubious penalty from Iaquinta brought Italy back into the game but the end result will send the whole country into shock. 1-1 with arguably the worst team in the tournament leaves Lippi and his team with questions to answer and a point to prove.

Marchetti

12 Frederico Marchetti

Position: Goalkeeper

Minutes played (game/tournament total): 90/90

Rating (game): 6/10

.

Marchetti looked and sounded confident in the build up to this match, however, the goal from Shane Smeltz was soft and his critics will claim that it should have been saved. After this he had little to do and although his kicking was good and his handling solid he will look back at this match and think he could have done better.

Zambrotta

19 Gianluca Zambrotta

Position: Right Back

Minutes played (game/tournament total): 90/180

Rating (game): 7.5/10

The best Italian player on the pitch today, Zambrotta not only worked hard but attacked well, even in the early stages his free kick on the 9th minute showed his intent. He nearly scored with a well hit shot on the 21st minute and as the game went on he got better and better.

Cannavaro

5 Fabio Cannavaro

Position: Center-back

Minutes played (game/tournament total): 90/180

Rating (game): 4.5/10

7 minutes in and Cannavaro was at fault for the goal from Smeltz. The goal itself should not have stood but this was the second time in two games the ex-Juventus man has found himself in disarray after a set piece. Later in the game he looked jaded and a shadow of his former self. A cheap hand ball on the 71st minute was only worsened by the embarrassment of being turned inside out by Wood on the 82 min.

Chiellini

4 Giorgio Chiellini

Position: Center-back

Minutes played (game/tournament total): 90/180

Rating (game): 6/10

After missing an early chance on 16 minutes Chiellini defended well helping clear up two quick New Zealand breaks. He looked dangerous on the 81st minute from an Italian corner but ultimately lacked in conviction.

Criscito

3 Domenico Criscito

Position: Left-back

Minutes played (game/tournament total): 90/180

Rating (game): 7/10

After a poor pass in the first minute Criscito came into his own. Attacking well in the final third as the match went on he even tried to execute a wayward shot in the 31st minute. Overall however he looked better in the final third than he did defending although he is one of the few Italian players who can be happy with his performance.

Pepe

7 Simone Pepe

Position: Right Wing

Minutes played (game/tournament total): 90/135

Rating (game): 5/10

Pepe had played well against Paraguay but failed to get out of the blocks tonight. A player who is supposed to promise much especially as he now expects to wear the black and white of Juventus next season produced little and ultimately was substituted at half time.

DeRossi

6 Danielle De Rossi

Position: Center-midfield

Minutes played (game/tournament total): 90/180

Rating (game): 7/10

De Rossi started slowly as did much of the Azzurri, however after the first 15 it was obvious that he was trying hard to give the game some structure by shifting the play as much as possible from right to left. He won the penalty that lead to the equaliser and also tested the keeper on 44 minutes with a good shot from outside the box. The second half saw one amazing pass nearly create the winner but this was the last of his contributions.

Iaquinta

9 Vicenzo Iaquinta

Position: Forward

Minutes played (game/tournament total): 90/148

Rating (game): 6.5/10

The game started well for the Juventus hit man when he won a corner after two minutes. He battled hard and had the icy composure to convert Italy’s equalizer from the spot on 29 minutes. He was sporadic in the second half and came in and out of the game, heading wide on 78 minutes was his only real contribution other than the goal.

Montolivo

16 Riccardo Montolivo

Position: Center-midfield

Minutes played (game/tournament total): 90/180

Rating (game): 7/10

One on Italy’s better players, he had a good first 15 minutes although after this he failed to close down enough. A superb shot on 26 minutes threatened to break the New Zealand post but it was not to be. Another couple of strikes after this were also promising but did not have the same venom; he tracked back well all game but overall will be disappointed that he could not get the front two into the game more.

Marchisio

15 Claudio Marchisio

Position:Left wing

Minutes played (game/tournament total): 90/90

Rating (game): 5/10

Unheard of in the first 15 minutes Marchisio did not even get out of the starting blocks. He looked like he did not want the ball and when he had it got rid of it quickly. He looked nervous and did not live up to his potential.

Gilardino

11 Alberto Gilardino

Position: Forward

Minutes played (game/tournament total): 45/116

Rating (game): 4.5/10

It will be a shock if Gilardino starts the next game after proving that he is not up to speed in this World Cup for the second time in a week. He may argue his supply was poor but he did not once look interested in receiving the ball from his team mates.

DiNatale

10 Antonio Di Natale

Position:Forward

Minutes played (game/tournament total): 45/90

Rating (game): 6/10

Looked sharp again when he first came on with a good shot on 48 minutes, however, failed to be the impact substitute that Lippi needs so badly. He managed to get in many of the right positions but failed to get enough of the ball.

Camoranesi

16 Mauro Camoranesi

Position: Center-midfield

Minutes played (game/tournament total): 32/90

Rating (game): 5.5/10

A couple of intricate early touches and the odd good delivery were as good as it got for Mauro who all in all looked like he was lacking in creativity. A good shot from 35 yards made the keeper work but this was as good as it got.

Pazzini

20 Giampaolo Pazzini

Position: Forward

Minutes played (game/tournament total): 29/90

Rating (game): 5.5/10

Pazzini would have been annoyed that he did not start this tournament after the season he has had. However, he was very quiet after coming on making the New Zealand defence look better than any he had faced all season.
