Totti responds to criticism by former Lazio favourite

Roma captain Francesco Totti is currently embarking in a public spat with former Lazio star Paolo Di Canio who criticised i Lupi’s skipper on live television.
Di Canio was incensed by Totti’s reaction to being substituted in the 70th minute during Saturday’s match against champions Inter – where his replacement Mirko Vucinic scored the winning goal in injury time. Totti opted to head straight down the tunnel without passing a solitary glance to his peers on the bench. 42-year-old Di Canio, who was covering the game with television station Mediaset, labelled ‘er purpone’s actions as a “disgrace”.
“I find it incredible what he (Totti) did when he was substituted. It was an absolute disgrace. All of us are angry in similar cases, but I would have never been allowed to leave the field in that way. It’s disrespectful to your team-mates who remain on the field. The job of captain is to stay close to the team. A true leader would have remained on the sidelines and cheered his team on, not to leave your comrades, but he has proven himself selfish.”
This outburst has not gone down too well in the Totti camp who has responded with a statement on his official website by seemingly mocking Di Canio. He pays reference to the number of transfers that he has made during his career as well as diligently mentioning his links with Italian fascist groups.
“I understand him. (Di Canio)” says Totti. “In order for him to put his stamp on television and make himself noted he has to speak about me. On the other hand, he is an expert on flags and has waved many in his short career.”
It is no surprise that two of the capital’s most notorious son’s have embarked on such a tirade with one another due to the intense rivalry between those from i Giallorossi and the Aquile.
