After a round 15 that threw up a few surprises in Serie A, this weekend provides some big clashes at the top end of the table whilst providing some teams with the chance to get away from the drop zone.
In the battle for the Champions League Napoli host Inter Milan. Mention of that competition won’t go down well with the home side, having exited it in agonising fashion midweek. Gli Azzurri will be keen to forget this year’s unsuccessful campaign and a win this weekend will put them on track to qualify for next year’s tournament. Currently in third Benitez’s side are on track to do so, and their positive home form stands them in good stead as they come up against an Inter side, themselves striving to get back into Europe’s top competition.
Inter sit fourth in the table, just four points behind Napoli, and are unbeaten on the road this season scoring freely and being tight at the back. I Nerazzurri have lost just one game all season and although draws mean they are not as high as they would like, Walter Mazzarri’s side are in a good position to challenge for third spot this season, however expect Napoli to bounce back from their midweek elimination. Rather than call this one though you might be better off checking out the latest World Cup winner odds.
In another battle of the big guns, AS Roma head to the San Siro to take on AC Milan. Milan aren’t the force we are used to seeing this season and are languishing ninth in the table, with any kind of European football looking unlikely after just four wins all season. In contrast, AS Roma are hot on the heels on leaders Juventus and are the only real competition for the title. They remain unbeaten after another win last week and having conceded just five goals all season, AC Milan will do well to take anything from this game, with a Roma win most likely.
Juventus will be looking to forget their disastrous trip to Turkey midweek and should get back on track with another win in the league, continuing thier perfect home record against lowly Sassuolo.
In the battle at the bottom, Chievo take on Sampdoria as both sides will be desperate to build on wins last time out to take them away from trouble – a draw seems the most likely outcome. Meanwhile, rock bottom Catania are facing the gloomy prospect of being cut adrift. Already five points from safety, they host Hellas Verona who after an encouraging start to the season have their own European dreams. They are poor away from home though and Catania, having recorded all their points at home, should add some more to the tally.
It promises to be a telling weekend either way in Serie A as it continues to be a pulsating season.
