What next for Del Piero?

Few players embody a club in the same way that Alessandro Del Piero has done for Juventus. He is not simply part of the club, he is the club. That is why when one of the true modern day greats such as Maldini, Raul or in this case now Del Piero eventually leave their team, it is a very sad day for football.
Juventus fans need not shed too many tears just yet as he is not leaving Turin today. Lovers of football can also cling to the hope that he will ply his trade somewhere new in the future. The only definite in this situation so far, is that he will leave the ‘Old Lady’ in the summer.
Andrea Agnelli announced the news at a shareholders meeting on Tuesday: “The one link between Juve’s different homes has been our captain Alessandro Del Piero. He wanted to stay with us for one more year which will be his last in black-and-white. The new stadium is testimony to Exor’s ability to invest in years of crisis. The squad has been rebuilt completely and we’ve put the emphasis on youth. The team needs to grow but we are now competitive and can look forward to matching results that form part of this club’s history.”
This future for Juventus is evidently without the 36-year-old striker. He joined the Turin giants at the tender age of 18 and throughout many glorious years has become their most capped player scoring 205 goals in 495 Serie A appearances. With five Scudetto medals and a Champions League medal under his belt it is easy to see why the Bianconeri will grieve for this man who has captivated and amazed them through good times and the bad
So what next for “Il Fenomeno Vero”? If he still feels like he can play then will he let Angelli retire him from football? This seems unlikely, so in this case where would he go? If he does chose to say no to an offer from the Juventus board to move upstairs and help with the Turin giants’ transition, then his options must still be plentiful, even at 36.
Calcioline suggests that it is more than likely that Del Piero will hang up his boots although they also say that any possible chance of him playing on will see him move to the USA, where he will take on the role of immersing himself in football’s very well paid graveyard. In the UK the Daily Mail pays homage to the great player and suggests that many Premier league teams would be keen to take him on whilst in other sources Newcastle are slowly becoming the front runner for his signature. Mercafutbol also strongly links him to the Premier league and claims that a host of teams will claim they are interested within 24 hours. There are even reports in Switzerland coming out stating that FC Sion are going to make an unlikely play for his signature.
From now until the end of the season Del Piero will be linked with numerous clubs from Europe’s elite, the ambitious to the farcical. A player of this magnitude has earned the right to have a catalogue of world wide clubs fight for his signature even if it is for his swan-song. Some hope that he will retire and help Juventus in a new stage in their life. No matter what happens or where he goes it seems somewhat irrelevant, for when we all remember ‘Il Pinturicchio’ it will be in the black and white shirt of Juventus.
